What to expect
Assessment
(one to two 50 minute sessions) All therapy begins with an initial assessment. This is an opportunity for us to have a discussion about what has brought you to therapy and to develop a shared understanding about how your difficulties developed. We can work out together whether therapy with me is right for you and to begin to consider some specific therapy goals. I may ask you to complete one or more standardised questionnaires. We also discuss practicalities at the assessment, such as the confidentiality agreement and make initial plans for the number of sessions that may be required. |
Therapy
(weekly or fortnightly 50 minute sessions) Therapy sessions are directed by the goals that you agree to work towards at the assessment, although these sometimes change as therapy progresses and the issues become clearer. Therapy is about developing a deeper understanding about your difficulties and both learning and practicing new ways of thinking and reacting. We will often focus on managing challenging emotions (usually it is our feelings about ourselves and/or situations that brings people to therapy). To gain the most benefit from the sessions we will often agree between-session exercises to practice, but these will be rehearsed in therapy beforehand. It is also very important to meet regularly, since research has shown that therapy is most effective when sessions are weekly or fortnightly. |
End of Therapy
I aim to offer as few sessions as necessary in order for you to reach your therapy goals. The number of sessions varies from person to person. Sometimes people need only a few sessions in order to benefit from therapy, whilst others will need more time. It is not uncommon for people to attend for 10 to 20 sessions for deep-seated difficulties. This is in line with NICE recommended evidence-based therapy. The decision about when and how to end therapy, however, will always be taken jointly with you. |
